Judge Refuses to Intervene in Schiavo Case (washingtonpost.com)

I thought about this case for a while and couldn't decide. It is not the first time I've encountered this argument and can't still think which way is better...Let the patient die or hook her to life with every possible way hoping that a medical miracle will happen soon. In her special case I thought that 15 years of vegetable life is enough. And I honestly don't blame her husband for moving on with his life and loving another person.

I didn't know what to think until a few days ago. I listened to a doctor who had examined MRI's of her brain. The majority of her cortex is gone. It died 15 years ago and her body has reabsorbed the tissues. The cortex is the part of a human brain that contains our intelligence and personalities. Animals like frogs and reptiles don't even have a cortex. More intelligent animals, like dogs and cats, have some cortex. Great apes like chimps have a very well developed cortex, but smaller than humans. Unfortunately, the cortex is the most sensitive part of the brain to lack of oxygen, and is therefore, the most easily damaged. Terry Schiavo is not in a coma as some people seem to want to believe. People in comas often don't have brain damage. Their brains are just turned off, so to speak. This is why some people awaken from comas years later in perfect mental health. This will never happen to Ms. Schiavo. Her case is tragic, but in a very real sense, the person that she was died 15 years ago. I agree with her husband's decision and I also do not fault him for moving on.

It is hard to say. I know there is no hope for any kind of recovery, but starving her to death is something else. The process is not sudden. It is not like if we unplug her she is going to die immediately. That's why some people are concerned. I don't know!

If I had been in her shoes, I would have wanted to die! and if others didnt dare to let it happen, I would have done it by myself. It doesnt worth to live when your life doesnt make any difference, neither for yourself nor for the others. I guess that she would say the same if she
could communicate.
